Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
(Sunday 27th May 2018)
God is love – (Matthew 28:16-20)
Last Sunday the Church celebrated the Solemnity of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came down on the Apostles with Mary. The Holy Spirit being the third person of the most Holy Trinity. And the Sunday after next the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus being the second person of the most Holy Trinity. This coming Sunday the Church celebrates the Solemnity of The Most Holy Trinity. The three persons of the Most Holy Trinity being The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Three persons in one God.
It’s difficult to understand how three persons are one. It would be like trying to work how 1 + 1 + 1 could equal 1? And yet the three persons of the most Holy Trinity are one God.
God can be summed up into one word and that word is love. God is love. The word that describes the most Holy Trinity’s relationship with each other is perichoresis. This word describes the relationship between the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. The absolute loving relationship within the most Holy Trinity results in the three persons of God giving glory to one another. An eternal relationship of undivded unity and pure love.
Love cannot be love until it is shared. God shares perpetual love in the union of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. But God’s love is so infinite and overflowing that He wants to share His love with each and everyone of us. And so He created you and me and everyone because He loves us infinitely and He wants to share His love with each and everyone of us here on earth and then eternally with Him forever in the glory of His eternal kingdom of Heaven.
Jesus said to the disciples in Saint Matthew’s Gospel to ‘Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you‘. In our baptism we become members of the one family of God. By loving God and loving our neighbour we share in God’s infinite love. Jesus said all the commandments can be summed up into just two, to love God and love our neighbour which means to worship God alone and intend no harm to come to our neighbour. Our neighbour being everyone. By doing this God promises us eternal life.
So as we journey on our pilgrimages to God together, loving God and our neighbour, let us contemplate as much as we can on the mystery of the most Holy Trinity and God’s infinite love for each and everyone of us. And also let us thank God for everyone and everything that He has given to us in life, simply because God loves us, and wants us to live with Him forever in His eternal Kingdom of Heaven.
