True Humility – (John 14:1-12)
There is much fear around at present. In the midst of an economic downturn there is fear of losing one’s family home, fear of losing one’s job. In the area of world politics there is fear that maybe the current situation in North Korea might spiral out of control and cause another World War. At this time of year, as the academic year comes to an end, there is the fear of exams. There is also the fear with the ending of college; what are the job prospects? In the midst of so much fear what are we to do?
Fear is only cast out by true humility. True humility is not about feeling bad about oneself but rather seeing oneself in the presence of God and trusting in him. The person who is truly humble stops trying to play God and being in control of everything. In this Sunday’s Gospel the Lord Jesus teaches us how to learn true humility: “Do not let your hearts be troubled, trust in God”. Such is the truly humble person.
When one follows the way that Jesus points out to us, he will lead us to the truth and then we will have true life. Any other way which claims to lead us to peace will only lead to disappointment.
Father,
I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you:
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, O Lord.
Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you
with all the love of my heart,
for I love you, Lord,
and so need to give myself,
to surrender myself into your hands,
without reserve,
and with boundless confidence,
for you are my Father.
